The Junk Sub is a highly effective drilling tool designed for retrieving heavy scrap iron and metal debris that are too dense to be circulated out of the hole during normal drilling operations. Its large cup OD creates a small annular gap with the wellbore, while the mandrel is smaller at the cup rim, resulting in a larger annular gap at that point. This design causes a rapid drop in fluid velocity, forming a vortex at the rim of the cup, which in turn reduces the carrying capacity of the fluid. As a result, heavy debris settles into the cup, allowing for efficient removal during the trip process.
